Jean-Pierre Mathez (3 March 1938, Biel/Bienne – 26 November 2023) was a Swiss trumpeter, pedagogue, music publisher and cultural entrepreneur. Founder of Brass Bulletin and Editions Bim, he devoted much of his life to enabling music, ideas and experience to circulate across borders and to bringing together the different communities of the brass world.
He discovered the trumpet in his school wind band and developed an early passion for jazz. He played with various ensembles in his region before continuing his studies in London with Ernest Hall and later at the Geneva Conservatory, where he graduated in 1961 from the class of Paolo Longinotti, principal trumpet of the Orchestre de la Suisse romande. This early openness, from jazz to classical music, would remain characteristic of his career and, later, of his conception of Brass Bulletin.
From 1955 onwards, he became active in chamber music, founding a brass quartet — two trumpets and two trombones — for which he commissioned several original works, including compositions by Jost Meier. He subsequently held various orchestral positions with the Biel Theatre Orchestra and the Bern Symphony Orchestra, and later as principal trumpet with the Niedersächsische Sinfonie-Orchester in Hanover and the Lausanne Chamber Orchestra under Victor Desarzens.
His work as a performer took him across Europe and brought him into contact with musicians who would contribute to the profound transformation of the trumpet world during the second half of the twentieth century. His collaboration with Edward H. Tarr was particularly significant. He performed and recorded with the Edward Tarr Ensemble at a time when Tarr was playing a decisive role in the rediscovery of the historical trumpet. Mathez also recorded with I Musici di Roma, the Ensemble Vocal et Instrumental de Lausanne conducted by Michel Corboz, and in major works by Bach under Karl Richter.
His relationship with the trumpet, however, soon extended beyond the traditional role of the professional instrumentalist. Between 1971 and 1973, he conceived and presented around forty solo music-theatre performances under the title La démilitarisation de la trompette (The Demilitarisation of the Trumpet). The project already revealed a desire to question conventions associated with the instrument and to explore different relationships between performer, music and audience.
At the same time, Jean-Pierre Mathez developed an important teaching career. He became professor of trumpet at the Lausanne Conservatory in 1962 and also taught at the Fribourg Conservatory from 1971. His interest in new approaches to instrumental teaching led Universal Edition in Vienna to commission a trumpet pedagogy book from him, published in 1977 in the Wiener Instrumentalschulen series.
Alongside his activities as a musician and teacher, another ambition gradually emerged: to create connections between musical communities that still had relatively little contact with one another.
In 1969, together with his wife Gabi, he founded BIM — the Bureau d’Information Musicale — a music shop and professional centre devoted particularly to brass musicians. BIM gradually became an important European centre for the distribution of specialist sheet music. Two years later, in 1971, Jean-Pierre Mathez launched Brass Bulletin.
The idea behind the magazine was simple but ambitious: to provide trumpeters, horn players, trombonists and tuba players with an international forum in which they could share knowledge and experience, not only with one another but also with composers, teachers, instrument makers, acousticians, researchers and historians.
At a time when international communication was incomparably more difficult than it is today, Brass Bulletin enabled traditions that had often developed separately to encounter one another. French, German, British, American and Eastern European schools could meet within the same pages. Jazz appeared alongside orchestral playing, contemporary music, historical performance, pedagogy, acoustics and instrument making.
For Jean-Pierre Mathez, these fields were not separate worlds. They belonged to the same community.
Published in French, English, German, Italian and Spanish and distributed in nearly 80 countries, Brass Bulletin gradually became one of the major international publications devoted to brass instruments. Mathez was its publisher, editor-in-chief and one of its most prolific authors. Over the decades, he produced or published hundreds of interviews, reports, reflections, studies and personal accounts that today constitute an exceptional record of the evolution of the brass world.
Much of this adventure was built upon his personal relationships with musicians. Performers he encountered during his career became contributors to the magazine, and many of these collaborations developed into lasting friendships. Edward Tarr was part of this story from its earliest years. Later, major figures from the international brass world contributed regularly to the magazine. Thomas Stevens, in particular, became both an important contributor to Brass Bulletin and one of Jean-Pierre Mathez’s closest friends.
The diversity of these contributions was deliberate. A great soloist could appear alongside an orchestral musician, an instrument maker, a researcher or a teacher. An in-depth historical study might be followed by a backstage anecdote. For Mathez, knowledge should not remain confined within a particular circle: it had to circulate.
His publishing activities developed in parallel. Between 1972 and 1977, he was publishing director at Éditions G. Billaudot in Paris. He subsequently founded Editions Bim, whose international development would eventually encompass the publication and management of more than 1,600 musical works. The two ventures were profoundly complementary: Editions Bim allowed music to circulate; Brass Bulletin allowed ideas to circulate.
From 1993 onwards, Jean-Pierre Mathez increasingly concentrated his activities on publishing and promoting the composers and authors represented by Editions Bim. He also served on the boards of SUISA and the SUISA Foundation for Music. In 1999, Editions Bim acquired the American publishing house The Brass Press, further strengthening its international presence.
When the printed edition of Brass Bulletin came to an end with issue 124 in 2003, the magazine had accompanied more than thirty years of profound change. Instrumental practices had evolved, national traditions had encountered one another, new repertoires had emerged, historical research had developed, and exchanges between musicians had become increasingly international.
Jean-Pierre Mathez had been at once a participant, a witness and a conduit in this transformation.
As a musician, pedagogue, publisher and journalist, he maintained close ties with the international music scene for several decades. But his contribution lies not only in the publications he created or in the thousands of pages he edited. It also lies in the network of musicians, writers, composers, researchers and instrument makers whom he helped bring together.
Today, the digitisation of Brass Bulletin makes visible relationships that were once dispersed across 124 printed issues: following a musician from one article to another, connecting a person with an instrument, a school, a work or a period, and rediscovering conversations that sometimes continued over several decades.
The technology has changed, but the ambition remains close to the one that inspired Jean-Pierre Mathez in 1971: to bring the brass community together, to keep its knowledge and experience in circulation, and to enable one generation to pass its history on to the next.
