Fundador de Brass Bulletin y de Editions Bim, dedicó gran parte de su vida a hacer circular la música, las ideas y las experiencias más allá de las fronteras y a reunir a las distintas comunidades del mundo de los instrumentos de metal.
Comenzó a tocar la trompeta en la banda de su colegio y muy pronto desarrolló una gran pasión por el jazz. Tocó en diversas formaciones de su región antes de continuar sus estudios en Londres con Ernest Hall y posteriormente en el Conservatorio de Ginebra, donde obtuvo su diploma en 1961 en la clase de Paolo Longinotti, trompeta solista de la Orchestre de la Suisse romande. Esta apertura temprana, desde el jazz hasta la música clásica, seguiría siendo característica de toda su trayectoria y, más tarde, de su concepción de Brass Bulletin.
A partir de 1955 se dedicó activamente a la música de cámara, fundando un cuarteto de metales —dos trompetas y dos trombones— para el que encargó varias obras originales, entre ellas composiciones de Jost Meier. Posteriormente ocupó diversos puestos orquestales en la Orquesta del Teatro de Biel y la Orquesta Sinfónica de Berna, y más tarde como trompeta solista del Niedersächsische Sinfonie-Orchester de Hannover y de la Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne bajo la dirección de Victor Desarzens.
Su actividad como intérprete lo llevó a recorrer Europa y a relacionarse con músicos que contribuirían a la profunda transformación del mundo de la trompeta durante la segunda mitad del siglo XX. Su colaboración con Edward H. Tarr fue especialmente significativa. Tocó y grabó con el Edward Tarr Ensemble en una época en la que Tarr desempeñaba un papel decisivo en el redescubrimiento de la trompeta histórica. Mathez también realizó grabaciones con I Musici di Roma, con el Ensemble Vocal et Instrumental de Lausanne dirigido por Michel Corboz, así como en importantes obras de Bach bajo la dirección de Karl Richter.
Sin embargo, su relación con la trompeta pronto fue más allá del papel tradicional del instrumentista profesional. Entre 1971 y 1973 concibió y presentó alrededor de cuarenta espectáculos solistas de teatro musical bajo el título La démilitarisation de la trompette (“La desmilitarización de la trompeta”). El proyecto revelaba ya su voluntad de cuestionar las convenciones asociadas al instrumento y de explorar otras relaciones entre intérprete, música y público.
Paralelamente, Jean-Pierre Mathez desarrolló una importante actividad pedagógica. Fue profesor de trompeta en el Conservatorio de Lausana desde 1962 y, a partir de 1971, también en el Conservatorio de Friburgo. Su interés por nuevos enfoques de la enseñanza instrumental llevó a Universal Edition de Viena a encargarle una obra de pedagogía de la trompeta, publicada en 1977 dentro de la colección Wiener Instrumentalschulen.
Junto a su actividad como músico y pedagogo fue surgiendo progresivamente otra ambición: crear vínculos entre ámbitos musicales que todavía mantenían relativamente poco contacto entre sí.
En 1969 fundó junto con su esposa Gabi el BIM —Bureau d’Information Musicale—, una librería musical y un centro profesional dedicado especialmente a los músicos de metal. El BIM se convirtió progresivamente en un importante centro europeo de distribución de partituras especializadas. Dos años más tarde, en 1971, Jean-Pierre Mathez lanzó Brass Bulletin.
La idea que sustentaba la revista era sencilla pero ambiciosa: ofrecer a trompetistas, trompistas, trombonistas y tubistas un espacio internacional en el que pudieran compartir conocimientos y experiencias, no solo entre instrumentistas, sino también con compositores, pedagogos, constructores de instrumentos, especialistas en acústica, investigadores e historiadores.
En una época en la que los intercambios internacionales eran incomparablemente más difíciles que en la actualidad, Brass Bulletin permitió el encuentro entre tradiciones que a menudo se habían desarrollado de manera independiente. Las escuelas francesa, alemana, británica, estadounidense y de Europa del Este podían encontrarse en las mismas páginas. El jazz convivía con la práctica orquestal, la música contemporánea, la interpretación histórica, la pedagogía, la acústica y la construcción de instrumentos.
Para Jean-Pierre Mathez, estos ámbitos no constituían mundos separados. Formaban parte de una misma comunidad.
Publicada en francés, inglés, alemán, italiano y español y distribuida en cerca de 80 países, Brass Bulletin se convirtió progresivamente en una de las principales publicaciones internacionales dedicadas a los instrumentos de metal. Mathez fue al mismo tiempo su editor, redactor jefe y uno de sus autores más prolíficos. A lo largo de las décadas realizó o publicó centenares de entrevistas, reportajes, reflexiones, estudios y testimonios que constituyen hoy una documentación excepcional sobre la evolución del mundo de los metales.
Gran parte de esta aventura se construyó a partir de sus relaciones personales con los músicos. Intérpretes a los que conoció a lo largo de su carrera se convirtieron en colaboradores de la revista, y muchas de esas colaboraciones se transformaron en amistades duraderas. Edward Tarr formó parte de esta historia desde sus primeros años. Más tarde, importantes personalidades del mundo internacional de los metales colaboraron regularmente en la revista. Thomas Stevens, en particular, se convirtió tanto en un importante colaborador de Brass Bulletin como en uno de los amigos más cercanos de Jean-Pierre Mathez.
La diversidad de las contribuciones era deliberada. Un gran solista podía aparecer junto a un músico de orquesta, un constructor de instrumentos, un investigador o un pedagogo. A un estudio histórico en profundidad podía seguirle una anécdota entre bastidores. Para Mathez, el conocimiento no debía permanecer encerrado dentro de un círculo determinado: debía circular.
Su actividad editorial se desarrolló paralelamente. Entre 1972 y 1977 fue director de publicaciones de Éditions G. Billaudot en París. Posteriormente fundó Editions Bim, cuyo desarrollo internacional permitiría la edición y gestión de más de 1.600 publicaciones musicales. Ambas actividades eran profundamente complementarias: Editions Bim permitía que la música circulara; Brass Bulletin permitía que circularan las ideas.
A partir de 1993, Jean-Pierre Mathez concentró cada vez más su actividad en la edición y promoción de los compositores y autores representados por Editions Bim. También formó parte de los consejos de la SUISA y de la Fundación SUISA para la Música.
