What is Brass Bulletin?

Founded in 1971, Brass Bulletin is an international magazine dedicated to brass instruments, their repertoire, pedagogy, instrument making, and performance practice.
For more than three decades, it accompanied the evolution of the brass world and documented its musicians, ideas, and transformations.

A historical role

Long before the digital age, Brass Bulletin served as a unique space for exchange between musicians, composers, instrument makers, teachers, ensembles, and institutions worldwide.
Its articles, interviews, and analyses helped shape and transmit a body of knowledge that has since become historical.

The founder

The magazine was founded and edited by Jean-Pierre Mathez (1938–2023), a key figure in the international brass community.
Through his vision, editorial rigor, and extraordinary network, he gave the magazine its coherence, depth, and international reach.

The archive today

Between 1971 and 2003, Brass Bulletin published 124 issues and more than 1,200 articles.
The goal of the current project is to digitize this complete body of work, preserve it for the long term, and make it progressively accessible online.
New content is added regularly as the digitization process advances.
