Jean-Pierre Mathez (3 marzo 1938, Bienne/Biel – 26 novembre 2023) è stato un trombettista, pedagogo, editore musicale e imprenditore culturale svizzero. Fondatore di Brass Bulletin e delle Editions Bim, ha dedicato gran parte della sua vita a far circolare musica, idee ed esperienze oltre le frontiere e a riunire le diverse comunità del mondo degli ottoni.

Inizia a suonare la tromba nella banda scolastica e sviluppa molto presto una grande passione per il jazz. Suona in diverse formazioni della sua regione prima di proseguire gli studi a Londra con Ernest Hall e successivamente al Conservatorio di Ginevra, dove consegue il diploma nel 1961 nella classe di Paolo Longinotti, prima tromba dell’Orchestre de la Suisse romande. Questa apertura precoce, dal jazz alla musica classica, rimarrà una caratteristica costante del suo percorso e, più tardi, della sua concezione di Brass Bulletin.

A partire dal 1955 si dedica alla musica da camera fondando un quartetto di ottoni — due trombe e due tromboni — per il quale commissiona diverse opere originali, tra cui composizioni di Jost Meier. Occupa successivamente diversi posti orchestrali presso l’Orchestra del Teatro di Bienne e l’Orchestra Sinfonica di Berna, e in seguito come prima tromba del Niedersächsische Sinfonie-Orchester di Hannover e dell’Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne sotto la direzione di Victor Desarzens.

L’attività di interprete lo porta a viaggiare attraverso l’Europa e a incontrare musicisti che contribuiranno alla profonda trasformazione del mondo della tromba nella seconda metà del XX secolo. Particolarmente significativa è la collaborazione con Edward H. Tarr. Suona e registra con l’Edward Tarr Ensemble in un periodo in cui Tarr svolge un ruolo decisivo nella riscoperta della tromba storica. Mathez registra inoltre con I Musici di Roma, con l’Ensemble Vocal et Instrumental de Lausanne diretto da Michel Corboz e in importanti opere di Bach sotto la direzione di Karl Richter.

Il suo rapporto con la tromba supera tuttavia ben presto il ruolo tradizionale dello strumentista professionista. Tra il 1971 e il 1973 concepisce e presenta una quarantina di spettacoli solistici di teatro musicale con il titolo La démilitarisation de la trompette (“La smilitarizzazione della tromba”). Il progetto rivela già la volontà di mettere in discussione le convenzioni legate allo strumento e di esplorare nuovi rapporti tra interprete, musica e pubblico.

Parallelamente, Jean-Pierre Mathez sviluppa un’importante attività pedagogica. Dal 1962 è professore di tromba al Conservatorio di Losanna e, a partire dal 1971, insegna anche al Conservatorio di Friburgo. Il suo interesse per nuovi approcci all’insegnamento strumentale porta la Universal Edition di Vienna a commissionargli un’opera di pedagogia della tromba, pubblicata nel 1977 nella collana Wiener Instrumentalschulen.

Accanto all’attività di musicista e pedagogo emerge progressivamente un’altra ambizione: creare legami tra ambienti musicali che all’epoca comunicavano ancora poco tra loro.

Nel 1969, insieme alla moglie Gabi, fonda il BIM — Bureau d’Information Musicale — una libreria musicale e un centro professionale rivolto in particolare ai musicisti di ottoni. Il BIM diventa progressivamente un importante centro europeo per la distribuzione di partiture specializzate. Due anni più tardi, nel 1971, Jean-Pierre Mathez fonda Brass Bulletin.

L’idea alla base della rivista è semplice ma ambiziosa: offrire a trombettisti, cornisti, trombonisti e tubisti uno spazio internazionale nel quale condividere conoscenze ed esperienze, non soltanto tra strumentisti, ma anche con compositori, pedagoghi, costruttori di strumenti, studiosi di acustica, ricercatori e storici.

In un’epoca in cui gli scambi internazionali erano incomparabilmente più difficili di oggi, Brass Bulletin permette l’incontro tra tradizioni che si erano spesso sviluppate separatamente. Le scuole francese, tedesca, britannica, americana e dell’Europa orientale possono confrontarsi sulle stesse pagine. Il jazz convive con la pratica orchestrale, la musica contemporanea, l’interpretazione storica, la pedagogia, l’acustica e la costruzione degli strumenti.

Per Jean-Pierre Mathez, questi ambiti non costituiscono mondi separati. Appartengono alla stessa comunità.

Pubblicato in francese, inglese, tedesco, italiano e spagnolo e diffuso in quasi 80 paesi, Brass Bulletin diventa progressivamente una delle principali pubblicazioni internazionali dedicate agli ottoni. Mathez ne è al tempo stesso editore, redattore capo e uno degli autori più prolifici. Nel corso dei decenni realizza o pubblica centinaia di interviste, reportage, riflessioni, studi e testimonianze che costituiscono oggi una documentazione eccezionale sull’evoluzione del mondo degli ottoni.

Gran parte di questa avventura nasce dai suoi rapporti personali con i musicisti. Interpreti incontrati durante la sua carriera diventano collaboratori della rivista e molte di queste collaborazioni si trasformano in amicizie durature. Edward Tarr fa parte di questa storia fin dai primi anni. In seguito, importanti personalità del mondo internazionale degli ottoni contribuiscono regolarmente alla rivista. Thomas Stevens, in particolare, diventa sia un importante collaboratore di Brass Bulletin sia uno degli amici più stretti di Jean-Pierre Mathez.

La varietà dei contributi è voluta. Un grande solista può trovarsi accanto a un musicista d’orchestra, un costruttore di strumenti, un ricercatore o un pedagogo. A uno studio storico approfondito può seguire un aneddoto dietro le quinte. Per Mathez, la conoscenza non deve rimanere confinata all’interno di un determinato ambiente: deve circolare.

Parallelamente si sviluppa la sua attività editoriale. Tra il 1972 e il 1977 è direttore editoriale presso le Éditions G. Billaudot di Parigi. Successivamente fonda le Editions Bim, il cui sviluppo internazionale porterà alla pubblicazione e alla gestione di oltre 1.600 pubblicazioni musicali. Le due attività sono profondamente complementari: le Editions Bim permettono alla musica di circolare; Brass Bulletin permette alle idee di circolare.

A partire dal 1993, Jean-Pierre Mathez concentra sempre più la propria attività sull’edizione e sulla promozione dei compositori e degli autori rappresentati dalle Editions Bim. Fa inoltre parte degli organi direttivi della SUISA e della Fondazione SUISA per la musica. Nel 1999 le Editions Bim acquisiscono la casa editrice americana The Brass Press, rafforzando ulteriormente la loro presenza internazionale.

Quando l’edizione cartacea di Brass Bulletin si conclude con il numero 124 nel 2003, la rivista ha accompagnato più di trent’anni di profonde trasformazioni. Le pratiche strumentali si sono evolute, le tradizioni nazionali si sono incontrate, sono nati nuovi repertori, la ricerca storica si è sviluppata e gli scambi tra musicisti sono diventati sempre più internazionali.

Jean-Pierre Mathez ne è stato al tempo stesso protagonista, testimone e tramite.

Musicista, pedagogo, editore e giornalista, per diversi decenni ha mantenuto stretti rapporti con la scena musicale internazionale. Ma il suo contributo non risiede soltanto nelle pubblicazioni che ha creato o nelle migliaia di pagine che ha curato. Risiede anche nella rete di musicisti, autori, compositori, ricercatori e costruttori di strumenti che ha contribuito a riunire.

Oggi la digitalizzazione di Brass Bulletin permette di rendere visibili relazioni un tempo disperse attraverso 124 numeri a stampa: seguire un musicista da un articolo all’altro, collegare una persona a uno strumento, una scuola, un’opera o un’epoca e riscoprire conversazioni proseguite, talvolta, per diversi decenni.

La tecnologia è cambiata, ma l’ambizione rimane vicina a quella che animava Jean-Pierre Mathez nel 1971: riunire la comunità degli ottoni, far circolare le sue conoscenze e le sue esperienze e permettere a una generazione di trasmettere la propria storia alla successiva.

I suggerimenti di articoli correlati comprendono attualmente solo questo materiale digitalizzato.

Gli articoli digitali sono identici agli originali?

Conserviamo il più fedelmente possibile il testo originale, la lingua, le illustrazioni, le didascalie, le note e il contesto editoriale. La presentazione viene adattata per una lettura confortevole online e gli evidenti errori di trascrizione o scansione possono essere corretti. Il contenuto e il carattere dell’articolo pubblicato rimangono invariati.

Quali lingue sono disponibili?

Brass Bulletin è stato pubblicato in inglese, francese e tedesco nel corso di tutta la sua storia. Le traduzioni italiane e spagnole sono state aggiunte a partire dal numero 60. Sui siti italiano e spagnolo, gli articoli dei numeri da 1 a 59 vengono quindi mostrati in inglese per impostazione predefinita.

Con quale frequenza vengono aggiunti nuovi articoli?

Nuovi articoli vengono aggiunti quasi ogni giorno, con circa un numero completo digitalizzato ogni settimana. Il ritmo può variare in base al lavoro di preparazione, elaborazione delle immagini e verifica editoriale necessario.

Perché non tutti gli articoli sono disponibili in formato digitale?

La collezione completa di Brass Bulletin comprende 1.246 articoli pubblicati tra il 1971 e il 2003. L’indice completo è già disponibile online e consente di scoprire tutti gli articoli della collezione, compresi quelli il cui testo integrale non è ancora stato digitalizzato.

La digitalizzazione è iniziata nel febbraio 2026. Ogni articolo viene accuratamente preparato per la lettura online, verificato e collegato al relativo numero, agli autori, agli argomenti e alle illustrazioni. Al ritmo attuale di digitalizzazione, la collezione completa dovrebbe essere disponibile online entro febbraio 2028.

Perché alcuni riferimenti citano articoli che non sono ancora disponibili?

I riferimenti presenti negli articoli originali vengono conservati anche quando il materiale a cui rimandano non è ancora stato digitalizzato. In questo modo si preserva l’integrità storica ed editoriale della rivista. Man mano che nuovi numeri vengono aggiunti all’edizione digitale, un numero crescente di questi riferimenti condurrà ad articoli leggibili online.

Posso suggerire un articolo o segnalare un errore di trascrizione?

Sì. Se desiderate che un determinato articolo venga digitalizzato, oppure se notate un possibile errore di trascrizione o un’informazione mancante, contattateci. I riscontri dei lettori ci aiutano a migliorare l’edizione digitale e a stabilire priorità utili all’interno dell’archivio.
