The Trumpet in the USA

Gadgets

Trumpet players the world over have always shown an interest in any and every technical device which might improve their performance. American trumpet players are certainly no exception to this rule, and although many personal experiments have been undertaken, a few ideas have actually been developed into items now commercially available, on special order, from various manufacturers. Three of the most notable of these are presented here.

1. The Schilke Soundpost

Sliding bell "Bb" and "C" trumpets are enjoying a great deal of popularity these days because of their superb response and intonation; however, many performers, whose work requirements include a great deal of playing at high dynamic levels, have often complained of the difficulty of maintaining a good quality of sound in fortissimo on these instruments.

Scott Laskey, the brilliant young technician and protégé of Maestro Schilke of the company of the same name, has developed a "soundpost", a kind of portable bell brace, which helps solve this problem, and many outstanding American trumpeters are now using it. It is available from the Schilke Company, or it can be ordered through BIM, CH-1630 Bulle/Switzerland (About $35 U.S.).

2. The Louisville Leadpipe

Separate leadpipes, one each for "Bb" and "A", respectively, have been designed for use on Selmer and Getzen piccolo trumpets. Those who use these pipes claim they result in a smoother response and freer high register on their instruments. They are available from the manufacturer, Christy Music Company, New Windsor, Maryland, or through BIM, CH-1630 Bulle/Switzerland. The pitch and model instrument must be specified (About $25 U.S.).

3. The Reeves Extension

Bob Reeves, functioning in the role of innovator's innovator in this instance, has developed a leadpipe extension for the Schilke piccolo trumpet which eliminates the "bore gap" which results when the instrument is pitched in "A". This device was developed from an idea put forth by trumpet virtuoso Gerard Schwarz. It is available from Bob Reeves, 711 Ridgewood Place, Hollywood, California 90038, or through BIM, CH-1630 Bulle/Switzerland (About $20 U.S.).

The editor has presented these products solely for the information of the Brass Bulletin readership, and, in this regard, no guarantees can be offered. Furthermore, there is no suggestion that any of these devices are intended as substitutes for talent, ability, or serious practice!
