Some observation prompted by H. Baumann: Which Horn for which Music

In the United States at least there does not yet appear to be the habit of changing to various sizes and pitches of horns during a symphony concert, as is indicated for Germany in Mr. Baumann's article. It is not unknown, but so far only a very few players are attempting it with any degree of regularity. These are among the more adventurous.
I should say that our programs here are apparently not so demanding as they must be with the Berliner Philharmoniker. Even the Brandenburg no. 1 is generally played on the Bb horn, either on the Bb side of an F-Bb double instrument or else the single Bb. This may be due in part to the desires of various conductors ; those who insist on a fuller tone probably would not tolerate the instrument in high F. However in the commercial side of the business, notably TV, high F horns are used considerably more than in any other area of musical activity. But this is not a symphony orchestra, and tone is not as important.
